Along
with the chorus of feathered creatures, Calakmul is host to
45 species of amphibians and reptiles, 95 different mammals
including 5 of the 6 felines found in Mesoamerica, 36 kinds
of orchids, and 8 bromeliads making the area a magnet for
nature lovers who treasure the, as yet, unspoiled corners
of our planet.
This
five-day camping adventure to the southern part of Campeche
State, includes the opportunity to explore such archaeological
sites as Becan and Xpujil, and most importantly, the ruins
of Calakmul.
Calakmul
was a powerful and influential metropolis during the classical
period of maya civilization. It rivaled Guatemala's Tikal,
located a mere 100 kilometers to the south.
